(Feb 9, 2010) Call it addition by a lack of subtraction.
With the news that Jim Barker would be taking over in Argoland, Ticat defensive co-ordinator Greg Marshall finds himself without a head coaching job -- again.
Marshall was passed over in Winnipeg in favour of Roughrider offensive co-ordinator Paul LaPolice, but says he never was really in the running in Toronto.
"I was disappointed by the outcome in Winnipeg but as far as Toronto goes, I never spoke to anybody there," Marshall said yesterday.
Like LaPolice, Barker has experience as an offensive co-ordinator -- he was also a head coach in the CFL and XFL -- and Marshall thinks that could have been a factor in the decision- making.
"It seems to be a trend that people seem to be focusing on the offensive side of the ball," Marshall said. "Or maybe they don't like guys with moustaches."
Head coach Marcel Bellefeuille said while he understood Marshall's disappointment -- Bellefeuille was also passed over several times before getting the head job in Hamilton -- his return is good news for the 2010 Ticats.
"Continuity is good for our team, and Greg's a valued member of our coaching staff, so we're excited to have him back in the fold," Bellefeuille said. "Greg's a professional and he's been through this process before.
"After a short period of disappointment, I'm sure he'll shift his focus to what we need to do to get better."
That process may have already begun.
"We made a lot of progress last year and we put some good things in place, now we just have to continue building on it," Marshall said.
"There's no guarantees unless you keep working hard."
And he said he won't be reluctant to put his name forward next season should a head coaching job come up.
"You analyze the process and try and learn from it," Marshall said. "It's not going to keep me from pursuing these opportunities, and hopefully if I keep doing what I'm doing, sooner or later I'll get my opportunity."
